Anneli Nilsson - A profile of an Abstract
Artist
Artist's Statement: "Inspiration
for my artwork always starts with photographs. I use the camera as a creative
tool and as an extension of my eye, when exploring ideas for my expressive abstract
paintings. In my most recent work, I am searching for new ways of exploring and
developing my photographs of rock structures and seascapes. What excites
me about the rock structures are the layers and many different textures and inscriptions
in them. There is so much history in them that I want to explore in my art. The
ever changing sea and sky are other strong themes in my paintings.
The inspiration
comes from the landscape around my studio on the island
of Åstol just north of Gothenburg, in the Swedish archipelago on the
West Coast. Here I am surrounded by an abundance of natural forms.
Layering and texture are important aspects in the technique I use. I often
start a painting with a black base and then work and rework the surface with colours,
which is almost like working from a negative. As I prefer to use a piece of rag
rather than a brush, I see myself "sculpting" the image rather than
painting it.
I always mix my own paint to get the colours I want to use
for an artwork. For me this is very important in the creative process. I need
to feel that the colours are absolutely right for the purpose. I find myself almost
absorbed by the photograph I want to express in a painting, going back to the
feeling I had when I took the photograph. Mixing the colours is an almost spiritual
step in this process. Artistic inspiration comes from artists as varied
as Picasso, Georgia O'Keeffe, the photographers Alfred Stieglitz and Bill Brand
and the land artist Andy Goldsworthy. I also find artists such as David Hockney,
Gerard Richter and Nicolas de Stael very inspiring." back
